Don’t let the holiday festivities catch you off guard this season! The disarray of the holiday hustle and bustle can certainly keep one on their toes. At Xenia Heating & Air, we understand the importance of keeping your furnace in five-star condition to provide a warm, cozy place for your family and loved ones. The last thing you want is for your furnace to go out when it matters the most. So as a homeowner, what signals should you look for when it comes to your furnace?

Is Your Furnace Is Making Odd Noise?

Hearing any kind of rattling that might be coming from your furnace? Check the area for any loose screws. Rattling noises indicate loose hardware or debris, so performing a quick inspection can rule out that possibility. Banging noises may indicate there is a panel that needs tightening. Buzzing and humming sounds could also be your furnace trying to send you audible signals that something is going on. After checking the furnace area and ductwork for any possible holes, if you are still hearing irregular sounds, please give us a call to send out one of our NATE-certified technicians to diagnose the issue for you.

Is Your Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

Suppose your furnace is blowing only cold air at the moment. Consider checking the filter. As simple as it sounds, clogged air filters are one of the main reasons a furnace might be blowing cold air. Second, check the pilot light! You never know if it went out without you noticing. If you’ve checked and find it needs to be relit, your furnace should have directions on it for how to relight your pilot light.

Is Your Furnace Turning Off by Itself?

If your furnace has been shutting off frequently, know that you are not the only homeowner that has experienced this issue. It can be frustrating, but there are several reasons furnaces can turn off. So what should you check? Whenever you come across a mishap with your HVAC system, a good rule of thumb is to recheck those filters! The last thing you want to do is book a technician to come to your home, only to find out your system just needed a fresh filter all along! Clogged filters restrict airflow from reaching the heat exchanger resulting in the furnace shutting down often.

Is Your Furnace Producing an Odor?

When you turn on your furnace for the first time in the winter, it is normal to put off a slight smell. However, when heat comes into contact with dust, it can produce an unwelcoming smell. You can avoid this by making sure the surface of the unit is free from any dust particles. If you have let the heat run for a while and are still encountering odors, give us a call so we find the root of the problem ASAP! Also, don’t forget to check the air filters to make sure they are not the culprit!
